Russian officials said air defence systems shot down nearly 60 drones heading towards Moscow early on Monday, temporarily disrupting flight operations at several airports in the Russian capital.
Reuters reported that Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said on Telegram that nearly 60 drones targeting the capital had been intercepted.
He did not provide further details but said emergency services had been dispatched to the areas where the drones were brought down.
The attack forced temporary flight suspensions at Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo, Vnukovo and Zhukovsky airports near Moscow. Russia’s aviation watchdog later confirmed that normal operations had resumed.
The incident comes days after drones struck Moscow’s only oil refinery. During that attack, Russian air defence systems claimed to have downed nearly 200 drones, marking one of the largest aerial assaults on Moscow since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Reuters reported that Russia and Ukraine have intensified drone and air attacks in recent months, with strikes increasingly reaching areas far from the front lines.
