At least 54 people were injured and 18 others remain missing following an explosion at Qatar’s main liquefied natural gas processing facility, officials said on Monday.

The Qatari International Search and Rescue Group has been deployed to conduct search operations for those missing after what authorities described as an “internal explosion” at Ras Laffan Industrial City, Al Jazeera reported, citing Qatar’s Ministry of Interior.

The ministry initially said civil defence teams responding to the scene had not recorded any injuries. However, it later confirmed the casualties, attributing the incident to a “technical malfunction.”

Officials also said there was no gas leakage from the facility that would pose a risk to public safety.

QatarEnergy, which manages the industrial hub, said emergency response teams were immediately deployed following the explosion at the Barzan facility and managed to bring the fire under control.

Ras Laffan Industrial City, located about 80km (50 miles) north of Doha, is home to the world’s largest LNG export facility, producing about one-fifth of global supply.
