At least seven people have been killed and four others wounded in an explosion caused by unexploded ordnance in southeastern Paktika province, police said on Tuesday.
In a statement, the police headquarters said the blast took place in the Dangar Ligad area of Barmal district on Monday when a scrap dealer attempted to cut open a mortar shell.
It said seven people, including five children, lost their lives and four others were wounded in the explosion.
It added that the injured had been evacuated to health centres for medical treatment.
The statement urged people to avoid approaching unexploded ordnance and to inform security forces if they come across such items.
