In recent days, the debate over the Durand Line has once again intensified among Afghans. This time, the discussion has been revived by politicians who regard this disputed line as an official border with Pakistan and link many of Afghanistan’s hardships over the past half-century to it.
Opponents of this view, many of whom are Pashtuns, consider the line to have cut through their own body and identity, making its acceptance extremely difficult for them.
Historian and researcher Dr. Nabi Sahak, who has written a book and conducted extensive research on the Durand Line, approaches the issue from a different perspective. We discussed with him the roots of the line, its historical significance, whether the Afghan Amir of the time actually signed any document, and the firm position of Afghans on both sides of the line.
The discussion also raises the question of whether the reunification of Afghans across the line is possible.
