Afghanistan may be the only country in the world that still lacks accurate statistics in many areas in the 21st century. Regarding the population census, almost every aspect relies on estimates, which has impacted all areas of national and regional development, including planning.
There is a nearly ten-million-person discrepancy between Afghanistan’s population figures and those provided by international organizations.
The most recent population survey in Afghanistan was conducted in 2023. Before this, in 2016, a large-scale aerial survey of homes was carried out for the census, but the details were not released due to political reasons.
Additionally, a census was conducted in nine provinces of Afghanistan, revealing many new findings. However, this too became entangled in political disputes, and its details were largely kept confidential.
In today’s “Stability” program, we discuss this topic with former Kabul University professor Attaullah Seyedzi, who has been involved in statistical assessments and is currently conducting research in this field in the United States.
