Off-spinner Mujeeb-ur-Rahman has been ruled out of Afghanistan’s squad for the remainder of T20 World Cup.
He would miss out on the rest of Afghanistan’s matches due to an injury to his right index finger, the International Cricket Council (ICC) said on Friday.
Mujeeb, who has 46 T20 International caps and 59 wickets to his name, will be replaced by Hazratullah Zazai.
“The Event Technical Committee has approved Zazai as a replacement for Mujeeb in the Afghanistan squad,” the ICC said in a statement.
Zazai, who has played 43 T20Is, is not a like-for-like replacement for Mujeeb. However, 19-year-old spinner Noor Ahmed could fill the void.
In their last group match, Afghanistan will take on co-hosts West Indies before meeting India, Australia and the second-placed side in Group D in Super Eight fixtures.
Afghanistan squad:
Rashid Khan (c), Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Ibrahim Zadran, Azmatullah Omarzai, Najibullah Zadran, Mohammad Ishaq, Mohammad Nabi, Gulbadin Naib, Karim Janat, Nangyal Kharoti, Noor Ahmad, Naveen-ul-Haq, Fazalhaq Farooqi, Fareed Ahmad Malik, Hazratullah Zazai. Reserves: Sediq Atal and Saleem Safi.
Afghanistan advanced to the Super Eight stage by beating PNG.
