At least 920 people have been killed and nearly 4,000 others injured following devastating earthquakes in Venezuela, according to media reports.

CNN reported that search-and-rescue teams were continuing efforts to reach people trapped under rubble, while concerns were growing that the critical window for rescuing survivors was closing.

According to the report, at least 920 people have lost their lives and nearly 4,000 others have been injured in the earthquakes.

It added that many displaced families in Caracas, La Guaira and surrounding areas remain without shelter.

Meanwhile, some residents have criticised the pace of relief efforts and called for civilian volunteers to be allowed to assist in clearing debris.

The report further said doctors have warned that years of underfunding have left the country’s healthcare system ill-prepared to cope with the large number of casualties.

CNN also reported that US military personnel are assisting rescue operations in Venezuela, while international aid, heavy equipment and relief supplies are being transported to the affected areas.

Reuters reported that more than 50,000 people remain missing.

Jorge Rodríguez, Speaker of Venezuela’s National Assembly, said at least 383 buildings, 13 hospitals, 25 shopping centres and 1,002 other structures had been damaged.

Delcy Rodríguez, the country’s acting president, said 214 aftershocks have been recorded since the initial earthquakes.
