Diplomats from the European Union (EU) and Central Asian countries have discussed the situation in Afghanistan and its implications for regional security and stability, a media report said on Tuesday.
Kazakh media, citing the country’s Foreign Ministry, reported that the eighth meeting of EU and Central Asian special representatives and envoys on Afghanistan was held in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
Participants exchanged views on recent developments in Afghanistan, their implications for regional security and stability and opportunities to expand international cooperation in support of the country’s sustainable socio-economic development.
They also discussed ways to strengthen regional coordination, including the development of transport, logistics and transit corridors through Afghanistan. Such routes, they noted, could enhance trade and economic links between Central and South Asia and improve connectivity with the European Union.
The meeting further underscored the importance of the United Nations’ role in coordinating international assistance to Afghanistan.
At the conclusion of the meeting, participants reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation among Central Asian countries, the European Union and UN agencies in support of peace, stability and sustainable development in Afghanistan, as well as broader regional security and prosperity.
