Former Pakistani prime minister Imran Khan has been arrested by police after a court found him guilty of “corrupt practices” and sentenced him to three years in prison.
The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) chairman was arrested by Punjab police from his Zaman Park residence in Lahore shortly after the Islamabad court ruled Khan’s dishonesty had been established beyond doubt.
Reuters news agency quoted Khan’s defense lawyer, Intezar Panjotha, as saying that police arrested Imran Khan from his residence and a petition was also filed against the decision in a high court.
Bilal Deddique Kamiana, Lahore’s Police chief, confirmed the arrest of Imran Khan to Reuters and said Khan was being transferred to the capital, Islamabad.
According to reports, Imran Khan was sentenced to three years in prison for illegally selling government gifts.
This 70 years old politician was convicted of abusing his power and selling government gifts worth over 140 million Pakistani rupees while serving as prime minister from 2018 to 2022.
