US President Donald Trump has said a potential agreement between Iran and the United States could be signed by the end of this week, adding that the deal would include lifting what he described as a US naval blockade on Iran.

According to CNN, Trump’s remarks reportedly came as a surprise to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

When asked whether an Iran-US agreement could be finalized by the end of the week, Trump told reporters that a deal would be reached “soon” and could be signed before the week’s end.

Asked whether Iran’s Supreme Leader would approve the agreement, Trump said that, to the best of his knowledge, the answer was yes.

Trump also said that, if the agreement is signed, the United States would lift its naval restrictions on Iran as part of the deal.

The US president further claimed that finalizing the agreement would lead to a significant drop in global oil prices.

CNN, citing an Israeli source, reported that Netanyahu was chairing a security meeting on Iran when Trump’s comments about a possible agreement were made public.

The source told CNN that Israel had not been informed of any imminent agreement between Tehran and Washington, nor of any indication that Iran had approved such a deal.

CNN noted that this appeared inconsistent with Trump’s recent comments on his social media platform, Truth Social.

Separately, reports indicated that Trump on Thursday backed away at the last moment from authorizing new military strikes against Iran.

He reportedly said that discussions with Tehran had reached the highest levels of Iran’s leadership and had the support of a broad coalition of regional powers.

Reuters reported that the apparent shift in the US position occurred only hours before the strikes were scheduled to be carried out.
