United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has warned that the past 11 years have been the hottest on record, stressing that urgent action is needed to protect the environment and safeguard the future of coming generations.
In a post on X, Guterres said that every fraction of a degree of global warming intensifies its impacts, with the heaviest burden falling on the world’s most vulnerable people and communities.
He added that the warning signs of climate change are now evident across the globe and that the world is confronting severe environmental challenges.
“The time has come to act for our environment and our future,” Guterres said, calling for collective efforts to ensure a sustainable future for the next generations.
World Environment Day is observed annually on June 5 to raise awareness about environmental protection and the need to reduce pollution.
According to United Nations data, approximately 430 million tonnes of plastic waste are generated worldwide each year.
