Three British naval personnel have been killed in a helicopter crash in northwestern England, according to media reports.
The crash occurred around 4:00am on Wednesday during a helicopter training exercise near the village of Sourton in Devon, Al Jazeera quoted a Royal Navy spokesperson as saying.
The UK Ministry of Defence announced the news with “deep sadness” in a social media post, saying: “Our thoughts and sympathies are with their families and friends at this sad time.”
Sky News reported that local police were at the scene of the crash. A police spokesperson said: “The incident is ongoing, and we will share more updates as we have them.”
The head of the Royal Navy, General Gwyn Jenkins, said an investigation into the incident is under way.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said he was being kept informed about the situation. “This will be a deeply worrying time for the families, and more information will be set out as soon as possible,” Sky News quoted him as saying.
British media also reported that several naval bases are located near the crash site, including HMNB Devonport, which is considered Western Europe’s largest naval base.
