Iran’s national football team has shifted its 2026 World Cup training base from the United States to Mexico after receiving approval from FIFA, officials said.
Mehdi Taj, president of the Iran Football Federation, announced the decision on Saturday in a statement issued through the federation’s media relations office. FIFA has not yet publicly confirmed the move, Associated Press reported.
Iran had originally planned to base its training camp in Tucson, Arizona, but the relocation had been under consideration due to security concerns linked to tensions in the Middle East. Officials at Tucson’s Kino Sports Complex declined to comment on the matter.
The federation said the team will now be based in Tijuana, Mexico, near the US border city of San Diego. The 2026 FIFA World Cup will run from June 11 to July 19 and will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
“All team base camps for participating countries must be approved by FIFA,” Taj said. He added that the request was approved following discussions with FIFA officials in Istanbul and a subsequent virtual meeting with the FIFA secretary general in Tehran.
He said the decision followed formal requests and consultations regarding the relocation of the team’s base camp from the United States to Mexico.
