Hungary’s new Prime Minister Peter Magyar says Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would be arrested if he enters Hungary, media reports said on Tuesday.
Speaking during a press conference in Budapest, Magyar stated that any state party to the International Criminal Court (ICC) is required to detain individuals wanted by the tribunal if they enter its territory, Sky News reported.
He said he had already communicated this position directly to Netanyahu, who has been the subject of an ICC warrant since 2024 over alleged war crimes linked to the conflict in Gaza.
Magyar also announced plans to stop Hungary’s proposed withdrawal from the ICC.
The Hague-based court issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu in November 2024, accusing him of war crimes and crimes against humanity.
Under ICC rules, member nations are expected to cooperate in enforcing warrants issued by the court.
