The International Rescue Committee (IRC) has welcomed the announcement of a ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, describing it as a “critical and overdue pause for civilians” who have endured weeks of sustained violence.
US President Donald Trump said Israel and Lebanon had agreed to a 10-day ceasefire.
He added that the agreement was reached during talks between Israeli and Lebanese officials in Washington.
According to Al Jazeera, the IRC said in a statement that more than 2,100 people had been killed in the fighting in Lebanon, thousands more injured, and over one million displaced.
The committee stressed that the ceasefire should serve as an important opportunity to protect civilians, ensure sustained humanitarian access, and create conditions for lasting peace.
The statement also urged all parties to exercise restraint and commit to a political path that would prevent further casualties and address the root causes of the conflict.
