Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has stated that Tehran did not participate in the recent Islamabad meeting attended by the foreign ministers of Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Egypt and has not engaged in direct negotiations with the United States.
The foreign ministers of Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Egypt convened in Islamabad on Sunday to explore possible ways to end the ongoing war. The discussions are scheduled to continue on Monday.
According to Tasnim News Agency, Esmail Baqaei, spokesperson for Iran’s Foreign Ministry, said during a press briefing: “The meetings convened by Pakistan are a framework established by them, and we did not participate. While it is positive that regional countries are concerned about ending the war, they should also remember which side initiated it.”
He reiterated that Iran was not the initiator of the conflict.
Regarding potential direct negotiations with the United States, Baqaei stated:
“We have had no direct talks with the US so far. What has been discussed are messages conveyed through intermediaries, indicating US interest in negotiations.”
He added:
“Iran’s position has been clear from the outset, and we know exactly the framework we expect. The proposals presented to us have been excessive and unreasonable.”
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump told the Financial Times that indirect talks between the United States and Iran, facilitated by Pakistani envoys, are progressing positively. He noted: “We are witnessing progress toward an agreement with Iran, which may happen soon.”
