Supported by President-elect Donald Trump, Mike Johnson has secured the necessary votes for his re-election as the speaker of the US House of Representatives, media reports say.
By securing 218 votes, Johnson won the house speakership for the second time in a close contest on Friday.
Following his success, Johnson promised the new Congress would listen to the people and his number one priority would be defending the borders of the US.
He enjoyed the support of Donald Trump, the president-elect, but he had to lobby a couple of Republicans to get the required number of votes.
With Trump’s inauguration scheduled for Jan. 20, Republicans have control the House and Senate.
