Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has reportedly fled the country after opposition fighters entered Damascus, the capital of Syria.
The reports were confirmed by multiple sources on Sunday, marking the apparent end of Assad’s 24-year authoritarian rule.
According to Reuters, a Syrian army officer revealed that Assad left Damascus for an unknown destination earlier in the day.
Rebel forces, who declared the capital “free of Assad,” are expected to address the nation shortly, with plans to broadcast a statement on state television.
Assad’s family fled to Russia on Saturday, as the opposition gained ground in recent weeks.
A week earlier, opposition fighters captured key cities including Aleppo, Hama, and Deraa, following intense attacks against government forces.
As of now, there have been no reports of significant military resistance in Damascus, with rebels claiming to have entered the city without encountering Syrian army deployments.
