The Iranian government has executed at least 29 convicts, including two Afghans, in a single day, the Norway-based Iran Human Rights announced on Thursday.
The Iran Human Rights (IHR) wrote on its X handle 26 men were executed in Ghezelhesar Prison in Karaj outside Tehran, while three others were put to death in the city prison.
It said the executed individuals had been convicted of murder, drug-related and rape charges.
The US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) and Centre for Human Rights in Iran (CHRI) also confirmed the execution of at least two dozen people in Karaj.
“Without an immediate response from the international community, hundreds of individuals could become victims of the Islamic republic’s killing machine in the coming months,” said IHR Director Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam.
On Aug 4, HRO said in a report Tehran had executed 300 individuals, including 20 Afghans, in the first seven months of 2024.
On Wednesday, the caretaker government of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) asked Iranian authorities to extradite the remaining Afghan prisoners.
Taliban deputy spokesman Hamdullah Fitrat said: “As you know there are millions of Afghan refugees living in Iran. Of course, some of them may have problems or have committed crimes.”
