At least 32 people have been killed and 63 others injured as a result of an armed attack on the coast of Mogadishu, Somalia’s capital, the Voice of America reported on Sunday.
The assault took place on Friday night on a beach frequented by businessmen and government officials, the report said.
It added 32 civilians were killed and 63 others wounded in the suicide attack by Al-Shabaab — an al-Qaeda affiliate waging an insurgency against the internationally recognised government in Somalia for more than 17 years.
First, a suicide bomber detonated an improvised explosive device in the area and then the gunmen opened fire on the people.
President of Somalia Hassan Sheikh Mahmoud wrote on X he would hold an urgent meeting with the prime minister and top security officials to get information about the situation.
Video footage showed a number of bodies and injured people in Mogadishu’s Abdiaziz district, according to the BBC.
Al-Shabab claimed “politicians, [security] forces and employees from various ministries and offices” were among those killed.
The Somali Disaster Management Agency urged people to donate blood to the injured, some struggling for life.
