Afghanistan remains heavily dependent on Pakistan for trade with the world, and Islamabad has long exploited this dependence.
Although Kabul has expanded trade through Iran, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan, the shortest route to the sea — Pakistan’s Karachi port — continues to pose challenges for Afghan traders and has never been entirely secure.
