Who Was Mufti Munir Shakir?
Mufti Munir Shakir was not just a religious scholar but a bold voice for the awareness, dignity, and awakening of the Pashtun nation. He was a renowned scholar, thinker, and preacher, but more than that, he was a compassionate leader dedicated to the honor, survival, and enlightenment of his people.
Mufti Shakir always referred to the verses of the Holy Quran and used logic to enlighten people’s minds. Through sermons, gatherings, and public meetings, he fearlessly fought against superstitions, fabricated narrations, and distortions of religion. His speeches carried such courage that many scholars hesitated to speak in the same way, but he never wavered from his stance.
Mufti Shakir tirelessly called for Pashtun unity, consciousness, and freedom. He often said: ❝ I am a child of this land! I live for the children of my nation! I do not want my people to perish; I want them to understand and awaken! ❞
He was a member of the Khyber Jirga and a strong supporter of the Pashtun Tahafuz Movement (PTM). Mufti Shakir legitimized the voice of Pashtun resistance and justice-seeking, never surrendering to oppression, and he consistently fought for justice and equality.
In the final days of his life, Mufti Shakir revealed that he was receiving death threats, but he vowed that he would never remain silent in the pursuit of truth, faith, and his nation. He had foreseen his martyrdom, yet he did not retreat from his struggle.
On March 15, 2025, while heading to Mera Kachori Mosque in Peshawar for prayer, he was targeted in a brutal bomb attack at the mosque entrance. He was severely injured and later succumbed to his wounds in the hospital.
Mufti Munir Shakir lost his life, but his voice for truth will remain eternal and his struggle, ideology, and enlightenment will continue to be a guiding light for Pashtun generations.
