Iran has announced plans to build a railway linking China through Afghanistan’s northern Wakhan Corridor. Kabul has welcomed the initiative and has already begun constructing a road via the Wakhan route up to the Chinese border.
The Wakhan Corridor is one of Afghanistan’s most important connections to China. Its activation as a transit corridor could bring fundamental economic and strategic transformations to the region.
Today’s program examines Wakhan’s geostrategic and geoeconomic significance, explores the feasibility of the route, and compares it with Pakistan’s CPEC project.
The guest is Najibullah Ali Khail, Afghanistan’s last ambassador to Pakistan. He previously served as head of border affairs at Afghanistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and twice led Afghan delegations in negotiations to reaffirm border markers between Afghanistan and China. He has firsthand knowledge of the Wakhan Corridor and surrounding areas.
