The Great Powers’ Competition over Minerals: The Hidden War for the Future of Energy

Canada is striving to establish a new global alliance for securing critical minerals — an alliance that could reshape the future of energy and technology among the world’s seven major industrial nations (G7). This initiative is built on the principles of transparent, democratic, and responsible extraction, and highlights Canada’s ambition to play a leading role in the global transition toward clean energy.

Canada aims to lead the global supply chain for critical minerals, break China’s monopoly, and is investing 6.4 billion USD to accelerate the shift to clean energy.

Tim Hodgson, Canada’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, said during a meeting of the International Energy Agency that this transformation marks an important stage in redefining global energy markets. He emphasized that his country seeks to lead a new vision of energy security and climate stability through green technologies, carbon-reduction initiatives, and industrial innovation.

On October 30–31, 2025, the energy and environment ministers of the world’s seven largest economies gathered in Toronto under Canada’s chairmanship. This meeting, regarded as a key milestone in shaping a sustainable future for humanity, focused on diversifying the supply chains of critical minerals and reducing the West’s dependence on China.

The conference was not merely a political discussion; it redefined the very concept of global security in the 21st century. Today, security no longer solely means military power — it is intertwined with energy, sustainable natural resources, and fair access to essential materials. The decisions made at this gathering outline a global roadmap for building a healthier, safer, and more stable world.

One of the central themes was the growing competition over the supply of critical minerals such as cobalt, nickel, and lithium — the fundamental pillars of clean energy and the digital technologies of the future. The G7 countries’ heavy dependence on resources controlled by a few powers was highlighted as a serious risk.

As a result, Toronto became a stage for concrete action. The G7 nations moved beyond dialogue and announced financial and operational commitments to diversify the supply chains of critical materials — an economic and geopolitical response to resource monopolization.
