For nearly four and a half decades, Voice of America and later Azadi Radio provided broadcasts and analysis for Afghans.
However, at a time when access to impartial and independent information in Afghanistan has become limited, the Trump administration cut the budget for these broadcasting platforms.
As a result, in addition to these radio services, Deewa and Mashaal radios were also shut down.
Pashtuns on both sides of the Durand Line—or broadly speaking, Afghans—had been familiar with these media outlets, their frequencies, and their journalistic figures for the past 45 years. One such figure is Rahman Buneri, who became known to Afghans on both sides through his presence on the screen of Ashna TV and his voice on Deewa Radio.
To understand the role these media outlets played in political, economic, social, and security matters, the challenges their employees faced, and how their closure will impact Afghans on both sides, we conducted an interview with Mr. Buneri.
We invite you to follow our conversation.
