Kabul Municipality has launched the implementation phase of its 15-year development plan. Across the city, numerous major and minor roads as well as new flyovers are under construction.
The municipality has released a comprehensive road master plan, which outlines the construction of dozens of kilometers of new roads in every district. Although the project may lead to the demolition of tens of thousands of houses, officials say that once completed, Kabul will take on a modern and significantly improved urban shape.
According to Kabul Municipality, road construction projects worth over 8 billion Afghanis are currently underway. Work on two major flyovers is also in progress, and a large flyover connecting Lahori Gate and Chaman is expected to be built next year.
The municipality states that Kabul’s revenues have tripled, with this year’s target set at 13 billion Afghanis, four times higher than during the previous republic.
For more details on road construction, bridges, canals, water systems, and other development projects in the capital, we conducted a special interview with Nematullah Barkzai, the head of communications and spokesperson for Kabul Municipality, which we invite you to read.
