A few days ago, a lawmaker in the Australian Parliament sharply criticized former Afghan King Amir Abdur Rahman, accusing him of genocide. The remarks sparked strong reactions from Afghans living in Australia, who condemned them as a serious insult to Afghanistan’s history.
In Australia, the contributions of Pashtuns have been officially recognized in books and historical records. The country credits Pashtuns with supporting the development of its trade and railway systems, and in honor of their contributions, one railway line was named “Pakan.”
Earlier, the name of a popular Afghan market, “Afghan Bazaar,” also came under scrutiny due to a controversy involving a group of Hazaras who migrated from Quetta to Australia. It appears this group has been actively attempting to undermine the history of Afghans in the country.
We discuss this issue today with Atal Amin, who has lived in Australia for over three decades and previously worked in Kabul during the republic era at the Independent Election Commission and the Enterprise Support Agency (ESA).
