Liberal leader and Prime minister Mark Carney took direct aim at U.S. President Donald Trump during a campaign rally in Scarborough Friday evening, warning that Trump’s return threatens global economic stability and poses a serious risk to Canadian sovereignty.
“We are facing the most significant crisis of our lifetimes because of President Trump’s unjustified tariffs and his threats to our sovereignty,” Carney told supporters. “We will reject any attempt to weaken Canada — any attempt to break us so that America can own us. That will never, ever happen.”
Carney cast himself as the only leader prepared to stand up to Trump, emphasizing Canada’s strength, unity, and resilience. He pledged to build “the strongest economy in the G7 — an economy that works for everyone.”
Earlier this week, Trump announced sweeping new U.S. tariffs, including a 25% duty on all foreign-made vehicles and a 10% baseline tariff on imports from many countries. While Canada was exempt from the new baseline tariff, existing duties remain on Canadian steel, aluminum, vehicles, energy, and potash.
In response, Carney announced a 25% retaliatory tariff on U.S.-made vehicles, calling the move a strategy designed for “maximum impact in the U.S. and minimum impact in Canada.”
“We didn’t ask for this fight,” Carney said. “But Canadians are always ready when someone else drops the gloves. In this trade war — just like in hockey — we will win.”
The federal election is set for April 28, but voters can cast their ballots early at advance polls.
