International organisations have described the water shortage crisis in Afghanistan, particularly in the capital Kabul, as alarming, warning that if the issue is not addressed soon, Kabul could become the world’s first dry city within the next few years.
In a recent report, international organisation Mercy Corps stated that six million people in Kabul were facing a shortage of water for drinking and daily life.
Ninety percent of Kabul residents rely on wells in their homes to meet their water needs. Over the past decade, the groundwater level in various parts of the city has dropped between 30 and 150 metres.
Other major cities such as Kandahar, Mazar-i-Sharif and Herat are also facing similar issues. In other regions of the country, excessive and careless use of groundwater has further exacerbated the crisis.
To explore this topic in more depth, we spoke with Asim Mayar, a specialist in water management and engineering. Stay tuned to hear his insights.
