In this program, we share the story of Mohammad Khan, an Afghan who around 165 years ago, during the American Civil War, fought alongside U.S. forces in the ranks of the Union Army and played a role in the consolidation of the United States.
The program explores key stages of his life, recounts his journey from Afghanistan to the United States, and shows how he joined the Union Army.
It also examines Mohammad Khan’s military service, his experiences in battle, accounts of his injuries, and the challenges he faced due to racial discrimination and prejudice.
Additionally, based on authenticated documents from the U.S. National Archives, the program presents key details from his 200-page pension file, regarded as the most accurate and comprehensive record of his life and service.
