In this episode of “Successful Figures,” our guest is Alam Gul Sahar, a former cultural attaché of Afghanistan in Germany, a prominent Pashto writer, poet, journalist, translator, and innovative storyteller.
Alam Gul Sahar was born in 1963 in the Zurmat district of Paktia province. He completed his primary education at Zarmali Bator School, his secondary education at Sheikh Attar High School in Ghazni, and his higher education at Kabul University, where he studied Pashto language and literature.
Sahar is a skilled Pashto writer, poet, journalist, translator, and creative storyteller who has written and translated more than 30 books. His poetry collections include The Moon’s Beauty, The Funeral of the Sun, Dreams of Pariyal, Above the Moon below It Is You, I Am Thirsty You Are water, and more.
His works also include Love and Obsession (a collection of stories), Love and War (a novel), Satan’s Lantern (a collection of satirical stories), The Great Tragedy of Kabul (a daily documented account of war crimes committed by warring factions), Stars and Stars Laughing, Poems for Children, The History of the Presidential Palace, The History of Irfan Magazine and The Captive Pen (a research work), and the translated novel Tears Under the Pomegranate Tree.
Sahar has worked in various governmental institutions, including as a member of the Ministry of Education, a speechwriter for the President, Deputy Director of the Presidential Office’s Program Department, and from 2018 to 2021, as Afghanistan’s cultural attaché in Germany.
In addition, Sahar has contributed to numerous media outlets, serving as Deputy Editor and Manager of Irfan Magazine, a writer for BBC Radio, Spokesperson and Producer for Radio Azadi, Chief Editor at Lemar and TOLONews, and Managing Editor of Qalam Literary Magazine.
