Press Release – National Campaign for Girls’ Education

Two Years of Taliban Rule and the Continuation of Girls’ Deprivation of Education

Date: 19th August 2023

It has been two years since the Taliban took over. There were high hopes that perhaps the “second ordinance” might finally break free from the shackles of hostage-taking and open the doors of education, knowledge, and enlightenment for girls once again. However, it seems that the so-called “second ordinances” is merely a ploy to deceive the nation and rob their human and Islamic rights.

In the past two years, various inconsistent excuses were invented to prohibit girls’ education. While the nation was sure of the illogical and incorrect nature of these excuses, there was still hope that the opponents of knowledge and science would be convinced to reopen the doors of schools and universities. Unfortunately, decision-making power within the Taliban government has fallen into the hands of a few, and we see not only have the doors of schools not opened, but the doors of universities and educational courses for girls have also closed. There is a fear that further restrictions may be on the horizon.

History testifies that every time opportunities for independence and development arise in Afghanistan, conspiracies against our independence intensify immediately, targeting our academic and educational institutions most viciously. In the past two years, enmity towards modern sciences, particularly girls’ education, is part of the same conspiracy aimed at deliberately or unknowingly beginning the assault against Afghanistan’s independence, prosperity, and development.

We explicitly declare that the educational restrictions imposed on Afghan girls are no longer acceptable or tolerable. We now consider them a clear violation of Afghanistan’s national interests and the rights of Afghans. We stand as a national shield against it. We call upon all fellow citizens, especially esteemed religious scholars, venerable national leaders, and enlightened patriots, to join hands and raise their voices for the defense of independence, prosperity, and national interests.

The Taliban government is preventing girls’ education under the pretext of Islam. We implore all Islamic scholars worldwide that if there is any such ruling of which we are unaware, kindly inform us and the entire Islamic world. However, if this is not the case, then the Islamic world must save itself from this shame and disgrace. Unfortunately, hundreds of thousands of Afghans are subjected to the sufferings of migration because their daughters have been deliberately deprived of their human and Islamic rights. We clearly state that the direct responsibility for any affliction faced by these Muslim families lies with the Taliban and then with the Islamic scholars.

We also acknowledge to the global community that Afghans are part of the human family and deserve a humane and prosperous life. Ignorance and lack of knowledge not only make life difficult for Afghans but also pose serious threats to the world. We urge the global community to put an end to their indifference towards the rights of Afghans and take serious measures to ensure and guarantee their rights.

And our duty is only to convey the message clearly
