Addressing the Exclusion of Girls from Annual Kankur Exams: A Call for Equal Education Opportunities
July 19, 2023
With great concern, we acknowledge the recent decision made by the Ministry of Higher Education to prevent girls from participating in the annual Kankur exams. Once again, the de-facto regime has shown its lack of commitment to equal rights and access to education. This indicates that women will continue to suffer oppression as long as this regime remains in power.
This ban contradicts Islamic laws and human rights principles and goes against common sense and the national interests of Afghanistan. Education is a fundamental right for every individual, regardless of gender, and denying girls access to education sets a discriminatory precedent that hampers the country’s peace and development.
While the de-facto regime may provide reasons like the need to design new curricula, cultural sensitivities, and security concerns, we find these justifications baseless and illogical. Instead, what the regime truly needs are concrete steps toward promoting girls’ education, which is crucial for the nation’s prosperity.
We call on the de-facto regime to be transparent about its intentions and address the concerns of the Afghan people. The country’s future hinges on education for sustainable development, and we demand clarity on whether they envision a prosperous and discrimination-free Afghanistan or one plagued by ignorance and oppression.
As concerned citizens, we need to unite in the national campaign for girls’ education, emphasizing the significance of empowering girls to shape their nation’s future positively. We must not allow discriminatory policies to hinder our daughters and sisters’ potential but rather unite and raise our voices to protect their rights.
In this critical time, we urge all Afghan citizens to join hands in safeguarding the future of our country and securing the fundamental right to education for all. Let us pave the way for a brighter, more inclusive, and prosperous Afghanistan.
