A paramilitary soldier and four militants have been killed as security forces foiled an attack on a naval base in Pakistan’s southwestern Balochistan province.
The attackers tried to storm the PNS Siddique naval base in Turbat on Monday night, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said.
A statement from the military’s media wing said the attempt was frustrated due to the “swift and effective response by troops, ensuring the safety and security of personnel and assets”.
It added: “Security forces in the vicinity were immediately mobilised to support the naval troops.” All four attackers were killed in the ensuing clearance operation.
During an intense fire exchange, the army said, a Balochistan Frontier Corps soldier was killed.
A heavy exchange of fire and explosions were reported from the vicinity of Turbat airport on Monday night, according to Dawn.
More than a dozen blasts were heard in Turbat town, while the firing, which began around 10pm, continued late into the night, area people said.
The outlawed Balochistan Liberation Army claimed its Majeed Brigade was behind the attack.
A few days back, security forces had foiled a militant attack on the Gwadar Port Authority Complex in the same province.
Also on Monday, four militants were killed by security forces during an intelligence-based operation (IBO) in Dera Ismail Khan district.
