The UN food agency has expressed its concern over dwindling assistance to Afghanistan, warning that the situation is getting worse.
In a post on X, the World Food Programme (WFP) wrote: “Nearly 4 million mothers and children are malnourished today in #Afghanistan and with assistance cuts, the situation is only getting worse.”
The agency also published a video clip quoting Sakina whose daughter is one of the many children who receive treatment in a WFP-supported clinic to prevent malnutrition.
Earlier, UN Secretary-General António Guterres had written on X: “Many Afghans are destitute, struggling to feed themselves, living without access to education, healthcare or employment.”
More than half of the country’s population will require aid this year, but the UN humanitarian response plan has received less than three percent of the funds needed.
The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, besides acknowledging economic pressure on it, says it has always emphasised on lifting the restrictions imposed on the country’s financial sector.
