Wesal TV (Oshawa): Two Oshawa teenagers are facing a combined 20 charges after allegedly using counterfeit money to buy cell phones from online sellers, Durham Regional Police say.

 

According to police, the incidents took place between January and April 2026. Investigators allege that a 15-year-old boy and a 17-year-old girl used fake online accounts to contact at least 15 people through buy-and-sell platforms, including Facebook Marketplace and Kijiji.

 

Police say the pair arranged to meet sellers at different locations across Oshawa to purchase cell phones. During the transactions, the sellers were allegedly given counterfeit currency before the pair fled the area with the phones.

 

Investigators say the value of the phones allegedly obtained through the scheme totalled more than $6,800.

 

The 17-year-old girl was arrested on June 21, 2026, in connection with a separate police investigation. She has been charged with two counts of fraud under $5,000 and two counts of uttering counterfeit currency.

 

The 15-year-old boy was arrested on July 5, 2026, also in connection with a separate investigation. He has been charged with fraud over $5,000, fraud under $5,000 and 14 counts of uttering counterfeit currency.

 

Police say the 17-year-old was released on an undertaking, while the 15-year-old was held for a bail hearing.

 

The names of the two accused cannot be published under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. None of the allegations has been proven in court.
