A noted Pakistani religious scholar has been gunned down by unidentified attackers in Islamabad, media reports said on Saturday.
Deputy Secretary General of Sunni Ulema Council Maulana Masood Rehman Usmani was shot dead in Ghauri town area on Friday, police said.
On receiving information, police personnel and a large number of activists and local leaders of the Sunni Ulema Council reached the crime scene, which led to traffic congestion in and around the area.
The scholar was evacuated to hospital where doctors pronounced him dead. Usmani’s driver, who was wounded in the attack, is said to be in stable condition.
A large number of council’s activists and leaders gathered at the hospital, a police statement said. An autopsy was conducted before Usmani’s body was handed over to the council leaders.
Preliminary investigation showed the attackers on a motorbike targeted Usmani from the side where he was seated and left after confirming that he was dead.
