The United States (US) has carried out airstrikes on targets in Iran, while Tehran has targeted US military positions in the region in response.
US President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social on Friday that Iran had launched at least four armed drones towards ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz.
Following the incident, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a statement that US forces had struck targets inside Iran.
It said the strikes targeted Iranian missile and drone storage facilities, as well as coastal radar sites.
The statement added the operation was conducted in response to Iran’s military action against a commercial vessel transiting the Strait of Hormuz.
Meanwhile, IRNA reported that the naval forces of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) targeted US military positions in the region in retaliation for the US airstrikes on Iran’s coast.
According to IRGC statement, the United States carried out the airstrikes under the pretext that a commercial vessel had used an unauthorised route through the Strait of Hormuz.
IRGC also said that, under Article Five of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, responsibility for controlling navigation in the Strait of Hormuz rests with Iran.
It warned that any further attacks would be met with a broader response.
