Marking World Press Freedom Day, Amnesty International has said that 2025 is the deadliest year on record for journalists worldwide, with 129 killed so far.
Observed on Sunday, 3 May, World Press Freedom Day is designated by the United Nations and UNESCO to promote media freedom, support journalists facing threats, and remind governments of their obligations under Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
In a post on X, Amnesty International, citing a report by the Committee to Protect Journalists, said that 2025 has become the deadliest year for journalists globally, with 129 deaths recorded to date.
According to the report, Israel has been identified as responsible for two-thirds of the killings, while the Gaza Strip has been the most dangerous location for reporting.
The organisation added: “From deadly conflicts to media blackouts, when journalists are targeted, access to reliable information also becomes a casualty.”
