A federal jury in Virginia has found Mohammad Sharifullah, an Afghan citizen, guilty in connection with the 2021 attack on Kabul airport. However, a final sentence has not yet been issued.
According to Reuters, a federal jury on Wednesday convicted Sharifullah of conspiring to provide material support to a “terrorist organization” in connection with the 2021 suicide bombing at Kabul airport, which killed 13 US service members and about 160 Afghan civilians.
The jury, however, was deadlocked on whether his actions directly caused the deaths, sparing him from a potential life sentence.
Sharifullah still faces up to 20 years in prison. US District Judge Anthony Trenga has not yet set a date for sentencing.
Prosecutors said Sharifullah assisted the Afghanistan affiliate of the Islamic State group, known as ISIS-K, by conducting reconnaissance and facilitating communications ahead of the attack.
In February 2025, US President Donald Trump said that, in cooperation with Pakistan, the United States had arrested an individual in connection with the 2021 Kabul airport attack. At the time, media outlets identified the individual as Mohammad Sharifullah.
