Seven people were killed and 13 others injured after unidentified armed men opened fire in the Injil district of western Herat province on Friday, the Ministry of Interior said.
One suspect has been arrested in connection with the incident.
Mufti Abdul Mateen Qani, spokesperson for the Ministry of Interior, said the attack was carried out by unidentified gunmen riding motorcycles.
He said the assailants targeted local residents near a recreational area in Qabrezon village of Injil district—a site where people gather on Fridays.
“Preliminary information indicates that 7 people were martyred and 13 others injured, some of whom are in critical condition,” he added.
Qani noted that the figures are initial and more details will be shared later.
He confirmed that one suspect has been detained in connection with the attack.
According to a statement from Herat Police, the incident occurred near the shrine of “Sayed Mohammad Agha.”
The statement said security forces responded swiftly, arrested one suspect and launched efforts to identify and apprehend other perpetrators.
Police added that Sheikh Mawlana Islam Jar, the governor of Herat, along with other officials, visited Herat Regional Hospital to assess the condition of the wounded.
