UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has stated that Britain will not join a war against Iran, despite what he described as “pressure” from US President Donald Trump, the BBC reports.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Starmer said he had faced “a good deal of pressure” to reconsider his stance but remained firm.
“Whatever the pressure, whatever the noise, I am the British prime minister, and I have to act in our national interests,” he said.
When asked whether strained relations with Trump were pushing Britain closer to Europe, Starmer emphasized that the country would not have to choose between the two.
“It is in our interest to maintain strong relations with both the US and Europe,” he said.
On Tuesday, Trump told reporters at the White House that the war with Iran could end within two to three weeks and suggested that issues related to the Strait of Hormuz would be handled by other countries.
On the same day, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Washington could see the “finish line” in the conflict.
