Iran’s Foreign Minister, Syed Abbas Araqchi, has condemned the sinking of an Iranian warship by the United States, calling it as “a crime” and warning that Washington will “deeply regret” its actions.
According to Reuters, a US submarine sank the Iranian vessel off the southern coast of Sri Lanka.
US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth stated that the submarine targeted an Iranian warship it believed to be in international waters.
Officials at a hospital in the port city of Galle reported that 87 bodies had been transferred to the facility by military rescue teams. Another 32 survivors are receiving treatment, while around 60 of the approximately 180 crew members remain missing.
Sri Lankan authorities identified the ship as the warship IRIS Dena, noting it was returning from an eastern Indian port to Iran.
Araqchi, in a message posted on X, said: “The U.S. has perpetrated an atrocity at sea, 2,000 miles away from Iran’s shores. Frigate Dena, a guest of India’s Navy carrying almost 130 sailors, was struck in international waters without warning. Mark my words: The U.S. will come to bitterly regret precedent it has set.”
Reports indicate the Iranian warship had participated in a naval exercise organised by India in the Bay of Bengal from 18 to 25 February.
