UNAMA says Afghanistan is considered the third country in the world in terms of high casualties caused by explosions of unexploded ordnance, and that unexploded munitions and remnants of past wars continue to claim victims across the country.
These remarks were published today on UNAMA’s Facebook page.
UNAMA has called for financial support to non-governmental demining organizations, noting that these groups neutralize and clear landmines and other unexploded munitions left behind by conflict every day, while also providing public awareness on the risks.
According to the information shared, children are the most affected by unexploded ordnance and make up about 80% of all victims; many are injured or killed while playing with such items.
UNAMA added that awareness-raising about the dangers of unexploded ordnance and timely action can save many lives.
