The White House says that, based on information it has received, the implementation of about 800 execution sentences in Iran has been suspended. Iran’s foreign minister, however, has said that Tehran has no plan to execute protesters.
According to reports, White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt said that President Donald Trump received information on Thursday indicating that 800 executions scheduled for Friday had been suspended.
She added that the president and his team are closely monitoring the situation and that all authority rests with the president.
Leavitt also said that Trump had sent a message to the Iranian government warning that there would be serious consequences if the “killings” continue.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Wednesday, in response to questions about plans to execute protesters, that there is “absolutely no plan to carry out hangings in any way.”
It is worth noting that a United Nations Security Council meeting on Iran was held at the request of the United States on Thursday afternoon last week.
During the meeting, the United States said that all options regarding Iran remain on the table, Iran warned it would respond lawfully to any aggression, Russia urged Washington to return to rationality, and the United Nations called on all parties to exercise restraint.
