At least five people have been killed and 44 others injured after a passenger bus overturned in the Salang area of northern Baghlan province, officials said on Sunday.
Mohammad Ashraf Haqshenas, spokesman for the Ministry of Public Works (MoPW), wrote on his X account that the incident occurred in the Shawal area, north of Salang, at around 2:00am on Saturday.
He said a 580-type passenger bus veered off the road and overturned due to reckless driving, killing five people and injuring 44 others.
Haqshenas added that the injured were evacuated to the Khanjan district health centre for medical treatment by security forces.
MoPW has urged drivers travelling on the route to follow officials’ instructions and observe traffic regulations.
According to authorities, personnel on the Salang highway are engaged in snow-clearing operations at several points, and the highway has been temporarily closed to traffic due to stormy weather.
