For more than eight decades, relations between Kabul and Islamabad have experienced many highs and lows. Yet, for the first time, Pakistan’s current defense minister has openly described Afghanistan as an enemy.
Over the years, dozens of Afghan ambassadors have served in Islamabad, each with unique and fascinating stories from their professional and personal lives.
Among them is Najibullah Alikhil, who served as the final ambassador of the former republic in Pakistan. Today, we bring you an interview with Mr. Alikhil. This conversation is divided into two parts.
The first focuses largely on his personal and professional journey—from life in a village, to his career in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and ultimately to his appointment as ambassador.
The second part explores his official diplomatic work in Pakistan and Turkmenistan, his key diplomatic initiatives, and the shifting dynamics of Afghanistan–Pakistan relations.
In this interview, Ambassador Alikhil also reflects on favoritism and political influence within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as the state of the ministry during the Mujahideen, Taliban, and Republic eras—sharing insights and untold stories from behind the scenes.
