After nearly 182 years, a powerful earthquake has struck Kunar province in Afghanistan. According to United Nations data, the disaster has directly affected around 12,000 people, with the number expected to rise further.
This marks the third deadly earthquake in Afghanistan in just three years, following earlier quakes in Herat and Paktika, and now in the eastern province of Kunar.

To better understand the nature of earthquakes in Afghanistan, we spoke with Dr. Zakria Shnizi, a researcher specializing in seismology and tectonics at the University of Oxford.
