At least nine people have been reported killed and more than 100 wounded, including women and children, following an attack by ‘bandits’ in Nigeria’s Zamfara state.
Residents and local officials in northwest Nigeria said many were also abducted during the attack, amid rising violence by armed groups described as “bandits,” according to Al Jazeera.
The deadly assault took place on Friday in Zamfara state, a hotspot for attacks by heavily armed bandits who have terrorized the region for years. These groups have kidnapped thousands, killed hundreds, and made road travel increasingly dangerous.
Abu Zaki, a resident of Jangebe village in the district, said the victims included the head of the village’s vigilante self-defense group, his five colleagues, and three other residents.
“Everyone is now afraid to go to the farm for fear of being attacked,” said Bello Ahmadu, another local resident, confirming the reported death toll.
Mohammed Usman, also from the area, told Reuters that the attackers besieged the town for nearly two hours before taking their captives. Thousands of residents have since fled the village.
