UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres have urged both Israel and Iran to show maximum restraint and avoid at all costs a descent into deeper conflict.
He condemned “any military escalation in the Middle East,” said Farhan Haq, his deputy spokesperson in a statement.
The UN chief “is particularly concerned by Israeli attacks on nuclear installations in Iran while talks between Iran and the United States on the status of Iran’s nuclear program are underway,” the statement said.
Noting UN member states are obliged to act in accordance with the UN Charter and international law, the secretary-general urged both sides to show maximum restraint and avoid at all costs a descent into deeper conflict — a situation that the region can hardly afford, the statement added.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said on Friday that Israel has launched a “preemptive strike” on Iran.
Israeli Defense Forces confirmed in a statement that its jets have completed the first-stage attack, notably strikes on dozens of military targets, including nuclear targets in different areas of Iran.
Iran’s IRIB state TV reported explosions in areas of the capital of Tehran and counties of Natanz, Khondab and Khorramabad. Multiple casualties, including women and children, were reported in a residential building in Tehran, according to the state TV.
Former president Hamid Karzai and former head of the High Council for National Reconciliation in the previous government Dr. Abdullah Abdullah have condemned Israel’s airstrikes on Iran, calling them against international law and human rights principles.
Hamid Karzai on his Facebook page said Israel’s attacks on Iran this morning were against international law and strongly condemned them.
He added: “Iran is a good neighbor and has historical and cultural commonalities with Afghanistan, and has always supported and cooperated with our people in difficult times.”
The former Afghan president said that the world needs peace and tranquility more than ever before and the people of the world are impatiently demanding an end to wars in all parts of the world.
Similarly, Dr. Abdullah also wrote on his X page: “We strongly condemn the Zionist regime’s blatant and illegal aggression on Iranian soil. This hostile act is not only a clear violation of all international principles and human rights, but also a clear sign of this regime’s terrorist and expanding policy.”
He added: “We express our deepest sympathy to our friendly and brotherly country, the Islamic Republic of Iran, and extend our condolences to the noble Iranian nation and the families of the martyrs and we pray to God Almighty for a speedy and complete recovery for the injured.”
Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid on Friday condemned Israel’s deadly attacks on Iran as a clear violation of the basic principles of international law.
Mujahid wrote on his X-Page that the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan condemns in strongest terms the recent attacks by the Israeli regime on the territory of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
He said the assassination of nuclear scientists and commanders were considered a violation of the basic principles of international law, especially the national sovereignty of countries, and a clear violation of territorial integrity.
